CIDA Innovative Education Award Winners Announced

The Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2011 Innovative Interior Design Education Award. This award recognizes and celebrates innovative teaching and program-related practices that advance the cause of excellence in interior design education.

The first place winner is Jason Meneely, Assistant Professor, at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. Professor Meneely’s entry addressed the meaningful integration of technology in interior design education, demonstrating various innovative approaches to blending technology with free-hand drawing, real-time critique, and collaborative team work. “The CIDA Board congratulates Professor Meneely on these outstanding examples of innovative teaching methods that address critical areas and common challenges to interior design education. CIDA is very pleased to reward Professor Meneely for his considerable achievement,” states John Lijewski, FIIDA, Board Chair. Mr. Meneely received a $3,000 award in recognition of this honor.

Two entries were also recognized with $1,000 merit awards. Peter Benarcik, Professor, at Bellevue College, Bellevue, WA, received a merit award for the entry, “Literal/Actual: Folding –a vertical design studio dealing with the nature of the built environment – literally and actually.” Sheryl Kasak, Visiting Associate Professor, at Pratt Institute also received a merit award for her entry, “Retail: Changing Room — a collaborative exploration of material and occupancy at full scale.” An honorable mention was given to Hyung-Chan Kim, Assistant Professor, and Migette Kaup, Associate Professor, at Kansas State University for their entry, “A Kiosk for a Global Client: using human factors to explore cultural context.” CIDA is proud to honor these design educators for their exceptional work.
