2010 Innovative Education Award Winners

The Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2010 Innovative Interior Design Education Award. This award recognizes and celebrates innovative teaching and program-related practices that advance the cause of excellence in interior design education.

The first place winner is Mark Mappala from Bellevue College in Bellevue, WA. Mr. Mappala’s entry, “pop-up” studio, explored retail design problems in tandem with the design of an actual pop-up installation in Bellevue, WA representing students’ retail projects and conceptual speculations. “The CIDA Board congratulates Mr. Mappala on this outstanding example of teaching methods that involve innovative approaches, encourage creativity, and advance design conceptualization, while also building core interior design technical skills. CIDA is very pleased to reward Mr. Mappala for his considerable achievement with this retail design studio,” states Robert Wright, FASID, CIDA Board Chair. Mr. Mappala received a $3,000 award in recognition of this honor.

Two entries were also recognized with $1,000 merit awards. Kathy Ankerson and Peter Hind from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in collaboration with HDR, Inc. received a merit award for the entry, “UNL-HDR Healthcare Collaborative Studio.” Nancy Kwallek from The University of Texas at Austin also received a merit award for her entry, “An Innovative Approach to Teaching Color to First Year University Students.” An honorable mention was given to Igor Siddiqui from The University of Texas at Austin for his entry, “Digital Media in Interior Design: from Representation to Fabrication.” CIDA is proud to honor these design educators for their exceptional work.
